Packaging Inspection: Checking Labels, Seals and Package Completeness
Scope visible packaging checks and distinguish them from leak, seal-strength and hidden-content tests.
Packaging inspection combines several different checks. A clear scope prevents a visible label or seal from being mistaken for evidence that the whole package meets every quality requirement.
Create a check-by-check specification
Identify label presence, position, print content, closure appearance and visible item count separately. Define tolerances and acceptable variations with the quality team. Map each check to a camera view or other sensor. Hidden contents may need weighing or another method, while seal integrity may require a dedicated test.
Capture repeatable package views
Test glossy film, wrinkles, rotation and changing fill levels. Keep the inspection region visible at line speed and verify the trigger location. Product changes may require a different recipe or lighting setting. Store those settings under version control so an operator adjustment does not silently invalidate the inspection.
Coordinate reject handling
Track the inspected package to the reject point, accounting for conveyor speed and spacing. Use suitable feedback to detect a failed rejection or full reject bin where required. Define the response to an uncertain inspection. Keep pass/fail records linked to batch and recipe so a quality investigation can identify the affected production window.
Test each failure independently
Use known wrong labels, absent items, open closures and damaged print. Include acceptable wrinkles and cosmetic differences to measure false rejects. Verify both the decision and physical removal of the intended package. Do not infer leak-tightness or shelf life from a visual pass unless that specific relationship has been independently validated.
FAQ
Can visual inspection replace a leak test?
Not by default. Visible appearance and leak integrity are different properties and need appropriate validation.
