RSRP, RSRQ and SINR in Cellular Troubleshooting
Signal bars hide useful detail.
Signal bars hide useful detail. Read several radio measurements together and compare them with the actual application behaviour.
Understand what each indicates
RSRP indicates received reference-signal power. RSRQ describes reference-signal quality, while SINR compares the wanted signal with interference and noise. A strong power reading can coexist with poor quality, so one number should not define connection health.
Record context with measurements
Log technology, band, serving cell, antenna position and time alongside measurements. Use modem documentation to interpret units and unavailable values. Compare repeated samples rather than mixing readings from different modes or assuming universal pass thresholds.
Correlate with useful traffic
Measure successful uploads, latency and reconnection behaviour during the same period. Compare antenna positions one at a time. If radio indicators are reasonable but data fails, continue with APN, DNS, certificates and server checks instead of repeatedly moving the antenna.
FAQ
Can good signal guarantee a working dashboard?
No. Data-session, routing and application failures can occur even with good radio reception.
