Combining Vibration, Temperature and Current Data for Machine Diagnostics
Correlate complementary measurements with time alignment and operating context instead of averaging unrelated signals.
Multiple sensors can improve an investigation when they provide independent, relevant evidence. Simply combining three readings into a health score does not establish a diagnosis.
Map each signal to a question
Vibration may reveal a mechanical change, temperature a thermal change and current an electrical or load change. Their interpretation overlaps but is not identical. Define the failure modes of interest and explain why each measurement helps. Remove sensors that add cost without changing a decision or increasing coverage.
Align timestamps and operating context
Use a common asset identity and reliable timestamps. Measurements may have different sampling intervals and physical response times; temperature can respond more slowly than a current transition. Retain speed, load and mode so correlations are not driven only by production changes. Mark missing channels instead of silently substituting old values.
Keep the reasoning inspectable
Present channel trends and supporting events alongside any combined score. Explain which observation triggered review and which evidence contradicts the suspected cause. If using a model, test its behaviour when one sensor fails. A system should not report improved health merely because the noisiest sensor stopped sending data.
Validate against maintenance findings
Compare combined evidence with confirmed inspections and repairs across representative operating modes. Evaluate whether the extra channels reduce uncertainty or false alarms relative to the baseline method. Preserve cases where the system was wrong. Revisit the model after major component changes rather than assuming the previous relationship remains valid.
FAQ
Will more sensors always improve diagnosis?
No. Sensors need relevant placement, sound data quality and a clear interpretation strategy to add value.
