Designing a Custom Industrial IoT Gateway: Requirements and Architecture
Define interfaces, buffering, security and field support before choosing gateway hardware.
An industrial gateway bridges equipment data and an application. Custom hardware is justified when standard products cannot meet an identified interface, environmental or lifecycle requirement.
Write the interface and deployment schedule
List protocols, physical ports, signal levels, isolation needs and the number of connected devices. Define indoor or outdoor conditions, mounting, power range and service access. Separate mandatory needs from preferences. Evaluate an off-the-shelf gateway against this schedule before committing to custom development.
Separate acquisition from delivery
Design local acquisition, validation, storage and upload as distinct functions. Preserve timestamps and quality flags when connectivity fails. Specify buffer capacity, full-storage behaviour and duplicate handling. A cloud outage should not automatically stop local data collection, provided the agreed storage and power conditions remain available.
Plan identity, updates and diagnostics
Give devices unique identities and controlled credentials. Define authenticated updates, rollback or recovery, watchdog behaviour and version reporting. Expose health information such as last acquisition, storage use and restart reason. Remote support should use an approved access path rather than leaving broad inbound management ports open.
Design the production and service lifecycle
Include programming, calibration where needed, functional testing and serial traceability in the development scope. Identify component availability and replacement strategy. Pilot with real field devices and failure conditions before volume manufacture. The handover should include configuration recovery, interface documentation and a support responsibility matrix.
FAQ
When is a custom gateway preferable to a standard one?
When documented requirements justify the development, validation and lifecycle effort; not merely because a custom board is possible.
