LoRaWAN Gateway Placement for Factories

Gateway placement must account for obstacles, access and backhaul.

Gateway placement must account for obstacles, access and backhaul. A convenient power socket is not necessarily a useful radio location.

Map the real sensor positions

Mark sensor heights, machinery, walls and likely future obstructions. Include locations inside cabinets or near tanks. Evaluate antenna placement separately from gateway electronics when cable and installation constraints allow, while accounting for cable losses.

Plan installation and maintenance

Confirm reliable power, backhaul, mounting, environmental protection and safe service access. A high position may improve some paths but create maintenance difficulties. Assign monitoring for gateway health so a failed backhaul is not mistaken for dozens of failed sensors.

Compare candidate locations

Test representative uplinks from the final sensor enclosures at several candidate positions. Record packet delivery over time and process conditions. Select placement from measured coverage and operating needs, then document antenna orientation and installation details for future maintenance.

FAQ

Can one gateway cover an entire factory?

Possibly, but only a site survey and operational trial can establish whether coverage and resilience are sufficient.
