LoRaWAN vs Cellular for Remote Monitoring
Compare coverage ownership, power, bandwidth, infrastructure and operating cost before selecting remote-monitoring connectivity.
The best network is the one the operating team can support at the required sites. Both LoRaWAN and cellular can be reliable when the coverage model, power budget and failure behaviour are designed deliberately.
When LoRaWAN fits
LoRaWAN is useful for small, infrequent sensor messages across sites where an organisation can place and maintain gateways. It can provide predictable private coverage, but gateway placement, backhaul and radio surveys become the owner's responsibility.
When cellular fits
Cellular reduces the need for private gateway infrastructure and suits widely distributed devices where operator coverage exists. SIM management, recurring fees, signal validation and radio power peaks must be considered.
Design for outages either way
Remote devices should timestamp and buffer important readings, expose health status and recover without manual intervention. Connectivity is a transport choice; data integrity depends on firmware and system behaviour around that transport.
