PCB Stack-Up Planning for Mixed-Signal Electronics
Plan the layer structure before detailed routing.
Plan the layer structure before detailed routing. The stack-up should support signal references, power distribution and the chosen manufacturing process.
Map functional areas
Identify sensitive analogue inputs, digital interfaces, switching power and RF circuits. Place blocks so their current paths remain understandable and connectors support the intended flow. Splitting copper without understanding return paths can create a problem instead of isolating noise.
Agree a manufacturable structure
Ask the fabricator for available stack-ups and material tolerances. Use that structure when calculating controlled impedance. Document reference layers, copper thickness and any isolation requirements so the layout and purchasing teams do not work from different assumptions.
Review layer transitions
Check how signals change layers and where return current follows. Review vias, connectors and plane interruptions near critical paths. Include a stack-up drawing in the release package and confirm substitutions with engineering before fabrication proceeds.
FAQ
Can stack-up be decided after routing?
Late changes can alter impedance and routing assumptions, so agree it early and review any changes.
