NB-IoT Deployment: Coverage, SIM and Compatibility

An NB-IoT pilot should validate the exact module, firmware, SIM and site.

An NB-IoT pilot should validate the exact module, firmware, SIM and site. Do this before committing to a large production batch.

Confirm the commercial service

Ask the operator or provider about NB-IoT access, supported bands, provisioning and any relevant roaming restrictions. Record the confirmed service terms. A consumer SIM that works in a phone is not sufficient evidence that the proposed device can use NB-IoT.

Test registration and application traffic

Verify registration, data session establishment, DNS where used and communication with the real endpoint. Record connection times and errors at the installed antenna position. Check the power supply during transmit activity rather than diagnosing every reset as a network issue.

Exercise outages and sleep cycles

Run repeated sleep, wake and reconnect cycles using the expected report interval. Test loss of service and delayed responses. Keep a recovery policy that avoids rapid endless retries, and monitor last successful contact separately from the latest stored sensor reading.

FAQ

Can a coverage map replace a pilot?

No. It is a planning input; the actual installation and service combination still need testing.
