PCB Prototype Development Process

A practical path from requirements and schematic capture through layout, manufacturing files, assembly and board bring-up.

A PCB prototype is an engineering learning tool. The goal of the first revision is to validate the highest-risk circuits and interfaces with enough test access to diagnose what happens.

Requirements before schematics

Record supply range, current peaks, sensors, communications, connectors, enclosure limits, temperature, protection, certification goals and expected quantity. These decisions shape components and board architecture.

Layout and manufacturing review

Placement, return paths, decoupling, antenna clearance, creepage, thermal paths and test points should be reviewed before fabrication. Manufacturing outputs include Gerbers, drill files, fabrication notes, BOM and assembly position data.

Bring-up with a plan

Power rails are checked in a safe sequence before loading full firmware. Interfaces are tested separately, measurements are recorded and changes are fed into the next revision. A working sample alone is not enough without repeatable tests.
