LoRaWAN
Planning LoRaWAN Downlinks and Acknowledgements
Downlinks are a constrained resource.
Downlinks are a constrained resource. Use them deliberately for configuration and responses, with clear expiry and retry behaviour.
Separate intent from completion
A queued command is not proof that the device received or applied it. Track requested, delivered where observable, and applied states separately. Include a command identifier or configuration version so the application can reconcile what the device is actually using.
Budget network use
Consider receive windows, device class and network scheduling constraints. Avoid confirming every routine reading without a demonstrated need. Excessive acknowledgements and repeated configuration messages can consume capacity without improving the usefulness of the sensor data.
Design safe retry behaviour
Make configuration changes idempotent where possible and expire commands that are no longer relevant. Test delayed and duplicate delivery. For actions requiring strict timing or protective control, use an appropriate local control architecture rather than relying on cloud downlink timing.
FAQ
Does an acknowledgement prove a relay switched?
Not by itself. Application feedback or physical state sensing may be needed to verify the actual outcome.
