LoRaWAN
Private LoRaWAN vs Managed Network Service
Network ownership determines who maintains coverage and responds to outages.
Network ownership determines who maintains coverage and responds to outages. Compare responsibilities as carefully as equipment prices.
Define ownership boundaries
List who operates gateways, backhaul, network servers and application integration. A private gateway can still use a managed server, so the choice is not simply local hardware versus cloud. Document access, backups and exit arrangements for each layer.
Compare service commitments
Check supported locations, outage response, data retention and device limits. Ask how gateway failures are detected and who replaces hardware. A coverage map or subscription does not prove reliable reception at a sensor inside a metal enclosure.
Test migration and recovery
Run a pilot using the planned ownership model. Verify account recovery, device reprovisioning and export of configuration or historical data where supported. Include recurring service fees, site access and maintenance labour in the lifecycle comparison.
FAQ
Does private LoRaWAN always mean no subscription?
No. Hosting, backhaul, support and managed components can still create recurring costs.
