PCB Manufacturing Handover: Gerber, Drill, BOM and Placement

A release package should let the supplier build the intended revision without guessing.

A release package should let the supplier build the intended revision without guessing. Keep fabrication and assembly data consistent.

Separate fabrication and assembly inputs

Fabrication needs the agreed artwork, drill data, outline and board specifications. Assembly additionally needs a controlled BOM, placement data and relevant drawings. State units, origin, rotation convention and the treatment of bottom-side components.

Cross-check component identity

Compare reference designators across BOM, placement and drawings. Mark omitted parts consistently and inspect polarised component orientation. Review special instructions for connectors, programmed devices or hand-installed components before the assembler starts preparation.

Release one controlled package

Use a revision identifier and manifest for the approved files. Replace a package deliberately when correcting an error instead of sending disconnected attachments. Ask the supplier to acknowledge the exact revision and retain the reviewed package with production records.

FAQ

Can a PCB screenshot replace manufacturing files?

No. It can clarify appearance but does not contain the fabrication and assembly information required.
