Designing Inputs for 4–20 mA and 0–10 V Sensors

Industrial sensor inputs need scaling, protection and fault interpretation.

Industrial sensor inputs need scaling, protection and fault interpretation. Define the sensor wiring and electrical limits before choosing the ADC interface.

Define the electrical interface

Confirm whether the transmitter is loop-powered or separately powered and identify the return connection. For current sensing, select the measurement resistance and dissipation appropriately. For voltage inputs, check input impedance and divider limits across normal and fault conditions.

Budget measurement error

Include resistor tolerance, reference drift, ADC behaviour and input filtering in the error budget. Choose filtering to match process speed rather than masking useful changes. Review grounding, isolation and cable exposure for the actual installation environment.

Verify faults and calibration

Test known inputs across the range and record raw as well as scaled values. Check open wiring, out-of-range readings and power sequencing without exceeding device limits. Show a fault state separately from a genuine zero process value.

FAQ

Can 0–10 V connect directly to a microcontroller pin?

Only if the complete input is explicitly designed for that range; typical low-voltage ADC pins require an appropriate interface.
