Collecting energy readings without a separate polling MCU
Baztech contributed to hybrid solar and grid energy monitoring using EASTRON SDM630 three-phase metering and a Teltonika RUT956 router. The application measured solar and TNB grid power, with the RUT956’s built-in polling used to collect Modbus RTU readings and send them to a server over MQTT.
This configuration did not require an additional microcontroller solely to poll the energy meter. The router handled the supported data-collection function, while the integration work defined which readings the server needed and how they would be transferred.
Scope the meter integration clearly
A new enquiry should include the exact meter variant, its Modbus register documentation, the parameters required, reporting interval and server interface. Meter wiring and measurement configuration also affect what a displayed value represents, so those details need to be understood during commissioning.
The page covers integration experience, not a published claim about energy savings or measurement results.
Questions about this integration
Can RUT956 read an RS485 meter directly?
It can be configured for supported Modbus RTU collection over its serial interface. The actual meter’s register map and communication settings determine the configuration.
Does this replace every possible controller?
This example removes a separate MCU used only for meter polling. Other control, processing or timing requirements may still need additional hardware or software.
